Intel Rolls Out Chips Ultra-thin Laptop

June 02, 2009

At the ongoing Computex 2009 trade show at Taipei (Taiwan), Intel has announced the new ultra-low voltage processor Pentium SU2700 and Intel GS40 Chipset for packing more power in ultra thin laptops. Ultra-thin laptops form a different sub-segment in the mobile computing platform to bridge the gap between netbooks and mainstream laptops.

The new 45nm process, made Intel Pentium SU2700 ultra-low voltage processor, was introduced last week with Lenovo's new IdeaPad U350 ultra-thin laptop. Intel Pentium SU2700 is clocked at 1.3GHz, lower than Atom processors, with 800MHz front side bus and 2MB L2 cache.

This new single-core Pentium SU2700 chip is the first processor in the new ultra-low power chips to power ultra-thin and light laptops. The ultra-thin laptops already use mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processors. These ultra-low power chips would save power to stretch the battery life to as much as eight hours, depending on the applications in use.

Intel has also introduced the new Core 2 Duo processor of the mobile platform that cross CPU clock frequency of 3.0GHz. The new dual-core Intel T9900 is clocked at 3.06GHz with 6MB L2 Cache, P9700 runs at 2.8GHz with 6MB L2 Cache and P8800 runs at 2.66GHz with 3MB of L2 Cache.

Along with that, Intel also introduced its GS40 chipset which too was offered with Lenovo IdeaPad U350 laptop. The GS40 chipset is said to be slightly less power hungry and a bit scaled down version of Intel GS45 chipset. The GS40 would be a 'value' chipset for ultra-low voltage laptops featuring support for HD playback, native support for integrated HDMI and Windows Vista Premium support.
