US Firm To Launch Dual Screen Laptop

August 31, 2009

Gscreen Computers, an American firm based in Alaska, is set to launch a laptop with two screens and will target a niche market that could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The laptop comes with two LED backlit display screens of unknown resolution (ed: since they are widescreen, we suspect they are 1280x800 pixel models) with one sliding behind the other.

The rest of the configuration does not appear to be shabby at all. The default model will run an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 clocked at 2.26GHz, comes with 4GB, a 320GB hard disk, either a Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT or a Nvidia Quadro FX 1700M both with 512MB memory.

Weight as well as battery life are going to be the main concerns. The Gscreen will run come with a 9-cell battery which is likely to give enough "juice" to fuel two power hungry screens but this will add a few hundred grams to the laptop; expect it to weigh at least 5Kg.

Finally, the laptop is expected to be shipped with Windows XP and Vista although Windows 7 should not be discounted. GScreen is expected to go on sale by the end of the year for around $3000 (or £2000) directly via Amazon US. The company has also confirmed that it will be available through other Amazon stores worldwide.
