Several Microsoft Windows OS users are complaining about Black Screen of Death when they attempt to log into system. It is believed that this error is believed to be caused by the recently released security updates by Microsoft. However, the company denies this. British security firm Prevx also confirmed that certain users are facing the Black Screen of Death after logging in.
Also, a change in registry entry value - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell was observed. Microsoft investigated their November Security Updates internally and refuted stating that the reports were inaccurate.
At the Microsoft Security Response Center, the company stated, in an official statement, "Microsoft has investigated reports that its November security updates made changes to permissions in the registry that that are resulting in system issues for some customer." After investigation, Microsoft gave clean chit to its November Security Updates.
Microsoft further stated, "Because these reports were not brought to us directly, it's impossible to know conclusively what might be causing a 'black screen' in those limited instances where customers have seen it. However, we do know that the 'black screen' behavior is associated with some malware families such as Daonol." Prevx apologized later for the inconvenience caused and claims that the issue persists due to change in registry entry.
Microsoft has asked the affected people to contact their customer service.
