On Tuesday, Cisco Systems, makers of the Mino HD high-definition pocket camcorder, announced a companion product that plays captured 720p video on your HDTV: the "Flipshare TV".
This new offering contains three parts: a base station that connects to your TV or HDTV, a remote control and a USB dongle that wirelessly sends videos from your computer to the base station. A program called "Flipshare 5.0" manages your Flip videos and communicates directly with the base station. If you don't own a Flip camcorder or have Flip videos on your computer, other Flip owners can share their videos online through "flip channels" which can then be accessed by Flipshare TV.
Cisco Systems purchased Pure Digital Technologies, the maker of the Flip camcorder, in May. On Cisco's Web site, the unit is referred to as "Flip Video".
Even though the wireless adapter and base station communicate using Wi-Fi 802.11n protocol, they do not work with other Wi-Fi 802.11n devices. The two products come preconfigured to only communicate with each other through the Flipshare 5.0 software.
The Flipshare TV base station can plug into a standard-definition TV or HDTV since it offers analog composite connections and a digital HDMI connection. It is available for purchase now at a suggested price of $149.99.
Anyone who currently owns a Flip camcorder can upgrade to the latest version of the Flipshare 5.0 software. Besides adding support for Flipshare TV, the new software offers direct uploading to Facebook, YouTube and MySpace.
All apps submitted for the contest had to be made for Android version 1.5 in English.
Companies in other parts of the world have also held competitions to boost app development for Android in languages besides English.
Flipshare also launched new applications for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry OS. The applications allow users to access videos that have been uploaded to their Flip Channels or channels shared by other users. All of the applications are free to download and available now in each OS's applications store.
